Procedure
Step by stepConsultation and skin analysis
The first conversation focuses on your skin type, your starting point and your wishes. Together we clarify whether and in what form the treatment makes sense for you.
The treatment
Short pulses of light are delivered area by area while the handpiece continuously cools the skin. Most people feel a brief sensation of warmth; depending on the area, the treatment takes around 15 to 45 minutes.
After the treatment
Mild redness and a feeling of warmth are possible and usually subside quickly. Pigmented areas may temporarily appear darker. Consistent sun protection is important in the weeks that follow.
Light as one element of the whole: BBL HEROic™ is part of a treatment concept that takes your skin, your stage of life and your wishes into account.
FAQ
Frequently asked questionsWhat is BBL HEROic™ compared with laser and IPL?
BBL HEROic™ is a treatment with filtered broadband light (BroadBand Light). Unlike a laser, which works with a single fixed wavelength, BBL uses a broad spectrum of light that is set by filters to the skin concern in question, such as pigment or fine vessels. Compared with conventional IPL devices, HEROic™ technology works with higher energy, faster pulse delivery and integrated cooling. This allows larger areas such as the décolletage, arms or back to be treated in a comparatively short time.
Is the treatment painful?
Most patients describe the light pulses as a brief sensation of warmth or a slight prickle, similar to the snap of a rubber band. The handpiece is cooled continuously during treatment, which makes the sensation considerably more comfortable. If you are sensitive, a numbing cream can be applied beforehand. We are happy to discuss this in your consultation.
What should I bear in mind before the treatment?
Your skin should ideally not be tanned at the time of treatment. Please avoid extensive sunbathing and sunbeds for around four weeks beforehand and self-tanning products for two weeks beforehand. Some medicines can make the skin more sensitive to light, for example certain antibiotics or acne preparations containing isotretinoin. Please tell us in advance about all the medicines you take. We agree individually on active ingredients such as retinol or fruit acids and on the interval to treatments with botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid.
Who is the treatment not suitable for?
We do not treat during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Nor do we treat acute skin infections, inflammation or open wounds in the treatment area, freshly tanned skin or tattooed skin. Certain pre-existing conditions, such as light-sensitive disorders, epilepsy or blood clotting disorders, may also rule out treatment. We therefore always clarify in a personal consultation whether BBL HEROic™ is an option for you.
Is BBL HEROic™ suitable for every skin type?
The treatment is particularly well suited to fair to medium skin types. Because the light responds to pigment, darker or more heavily pigmented skin requires especially careful assessment and settings. Your skin type is assessed precisely in the consultation to determine whether treatment makes sense and with which settings.
How many sessions are needed?
That depends on the skin concern, the size of the area and your personal goals. Individual pigment spots often respond after just a few sessions. For widespread redness, couperose or blemished skin, a series of several treatments a few weeks apart is usually advisable. We decide together on the number of sessions, the intervals and a possible later refresher after the skin analysis.
When does a change become visible?
This varies depending on the skin concern. Treated pigmented areas usually become slightly darker in the first few days and then come away within around one to two weeks. Changes in redness and skin texture generally develop more slowly, over several weeks and from session to session. How your skin responds is individual. We therefore monitor your progress and adjust the treatment where needed.
What side effects are possible?
A feeling of warmth, mild redness and occasionally swelling are common directly after treatment. They usually subside within a few hours to days. Pigmented areas may temporarily appear darker. In rare cases blisters, crusts or temporary changes in pigmentation occur, particularly if the skin is tanned or sun protection is not maintained consistently afterwards. We discuss possible risks with you in detail before every treatment.
What should I bear in mind after the treatment?
The most important thing is consistent sun protection: protect the treated areas with a high sun protection factor in the weeks that follow and avoid direct sun and sunbeds. For the first one to two days you should avoid saunas, intensive exercise and irritating skincare products. Make-up can usually be applied again shortly after treatment. Please do not scratch off darker pigmented areas; they come away by themselves. You will receive your personal aftercare instructions directly after the treatment.
When is a good time for the treatment?
Because the skin should be exposed to as little sun as possible before and after treatment, autumn and winter are particularly suitable, especially if a series of several sessions is planned. In principle, however, treatment is possible all year round, provided your skin is not tanned and you are consistent about sun protection afterwards.
Can BBL HEROic™ be combined with other treatments?
Yes. BBL HEROic™ fits well into a more comprehensive treatment concept, for example with regenerative procedures to improve skin quality. Which combination makes sense, and in which order, depends on your skin and your wishes and is planned individually in the consultation.
Does health insurance cover the costs?
As this is an aesthetic treatment, the costs are generally not covered by either statutory or private health insurance. The costs depend on the treatment area and the number of sessions and will be communicated to you transparently after the consultation.
